Since working in the Antarctic I've been intrigued by the RRS Discovery expedition of 1901-04. Edward Wilson has been a role model for me as scientist, artist and confidant for others on the expedition. In the Southern Journey of 1902-3, the iconic figures of Robert Falcon Scott, Edward Wilson and Ernest Shackleton attained what was then the furthest point south reached by humans. The background loop represents footsteps. Different sections in different keys imagine different characters within a group hauling sledges, ending with the leader imagining the church bells on their return home - only to realise at the end that they are still trudging across the snow. As Charles Turley (1914) wrote in 'The Voyages of Captain Scott’:

'For ninety-three days they had plodded over a vast snow-field and ....striven and endured to the limit of their powers’
