about

Icequakes from microseismic P-wave data from two stations on the Rutford Ice Stream converted into sound files. Ten-minute segments were superimposed to decrease the interval between events, and processed in the studio:

1. The two stations panned between left and right channels to give stereo separation. When there is a time delay between event arrivals this gives a nice effect.

2. Dynamic noise reduction. This filter diminishes when it senses lower-amplitude lower-frequency 'background' events coming through the noise, but greatly reduces the noise between these events. This brings forward many low-frequency events that were harder to hear, if audible at all, on the raw version.

3. Manual editing of the large events spaced very 1-2 minutes per channel. These events were 'clipped' on the raw file (i.e. maximum amplitude far in excess of the dynamic range of the system), and not too easy on the ear, so these are now at a similar level to the lower frequency events, and are clearly separated by their higher frequency.

4. EQ. There is a lot of energy at <20Hz below human hearing but sufficient to cause speaker damage, so this was filtered out. There was a bit of gain applied for the lower frequencies (around 100 Hz or so). The resonant 'whistle' sound was around 480-490 Hz and there is still a lot of energy there so we suspect aliasing of higher frequencies, and reduced this with a bit of a notch filter.

5. Dynamic expansion of lower frequency events.

6. Reverb to create atmosphere with a 3.5 second period.
